Please be advised that the Fremantle Traffic Bridge will close from 1 February 2026 to enable completion of the new Queen Victoria Bridge.
As a result of the closure, it is expected that approximately 23,000 additional passenger vehicles per day will be redirected to the Stirling Bridge, placing increased pressure on surrounding road networks. At this stage, the full extent and duration of potential congestion remain uncertain.
Main Roads WA, the Department of Transport, and the Fremantle Port Authority continue to work closely with industry stakeholders to identify mitigation measures to support traffic movement throughout the anticipated 12‑month closure period. Heavy vehicles currently account for around 13% of total traffic entering and leaving Fremantle.
Proposed mitigation measures include:
- Adjusted traffic restrictions around Canning Highway to improve straight‑through traffic flow, particularly during peak periods
- Additional parking capacity at Fremantle Train Station to encourage greater use of rail services
- Reduced public transport fares
- Installation of extra traffic lights at the High Street roundabout to improve traffic management during periods of significant congestion
- Expanded use of CCTV and traffic monitoring systems to support traffic flow and enhance safety
